Today: toughest board is board 3, rated very hard. The other 7 boards may play easier.

Hints, one board at a time

Welcome back, puzzler. Octordle #1,682 for Wednesday, September 2, 2026 is live: 8 five-letter words, solved together with 13 shared guesses across every board. If yesterday's boards gave you trouble, today is a fresh set of 8.

Here's how this page works: the five hints below spread letters across all eight boards before naming the hardest one, so reveal them one at a time and stop the moment you know where to spend your guesses. All 8 answers sit in the blue box further down, locked behind a tap. Nothing here reveals itself on its own, not a single letter and not one of the eight words.

Eight boards, five rungs. Stop when you know where to spend thirteen guesses.

1 First lettersWhat letter does each of the 8 boards start with? Board 1: A · Board 2: C · Board 3: C · Board 4: S · Board 5: F · Board 6: W · Board 7: U · Board 8: B
2 Last lettersWhat letter does each of the 8 boards end with? Board 1: G · Board 2: O · Board 3: L · Board 4: N · Board 5: T · Board 6: Y · Board 7: T · Board 8: T
3 Repeated lettersHow many of the 8 boards have a letter that repeats? 3 of the 8 boards carry a repeated letter today. We're not saying which ones yet, so keep an eye out as you guess.
4 Wide overlap lettersDo any letters show up on 3 or more boards at once? Yes: E, O, L, N, T each appear on 3 or more of the 8 boards today, so a guess with them does extra work.
5 Today's toughest boardWhich of the 8 boards is likely to slow you down most? Board 3 rates very hard on our difficulty scale, thanks to a repeated letter, which is easy to miss and the uncommon letter V and an unusual -IL ending.

Drumroll, please…

Octordle strategy that actually helps

Proven habits from top solvers, useful today and every day.

Front-load information guesses

With 8 boards to cover and only 13 guesses, spend your first 4 to 5 guesses testing as many different letters as possible rather than chasing any one board.

Bank easy boards as they appear

Once a board shows several greens, finish it before it slips your mind. Every board you close early frees up guesses for the harder ones later.

Every guess hits all 8 boards

A word that solves one board still gives you color feedback on the other seven. With thirteen guesses for eight words, every guess has to test letters several boards still need.

Save your last few guesses for precision

With 13 guesses covering 8 words, your final guesses need to count. When a board still has several candidates, guess the one that also probes the boards beside it.

Watch for letters shared across boards

When two or three boards share a letter, a word containing it does multiple jobs at once. Across eight boards, a letter that repays you four times over is worth more than a fresh one.

Track boards on paper if you need to

Eight boards at once is a lot to hold in your head. Jotting down which letters are confirmed on which board keeps you from re-guessing what you already know.

How we rate each board's difficulty

Each of the 8 words is scored the same way we score Wordle: how common its letters are in everyday English, whether any letter repeats, and whether its ending follows a familiar pattern. The toughest board on any given day is the one most likely to cost you guesses, though the other 7 can still surprise you.

Easy

An everyday word with a common pattern. Most solvers clear it fast.

Medium

Ordinary vocabulary, but not a word you would spend an early guess on.

Hard

Uncommon letters or a repeated one. Expect it to eat extra guesses.

Very hard

The board that ends runs. Rare letters or a shape nothing else suggests. This is where streaks die.

How to play Octordle

The rules in full, for anyone arriving without them.

Octordle is eight Wordles played on one keyboard. Every guess is scored against all eight hidden words at once, and thirteen guesses is the entire budget for the set.

  1. 1 Type one guess, score eight boards

Each five-letter guess appears on all eight grids and gets its own coloring on every one.

  2. 2 Open with three coverage words

Thirteen guesses for eight words leaves very little slack. The first three guesses should test fifteen different letters and solve nothing.

  3. 3 Close boards in order of certainty

Solve whichever board has the most greens, then reassess. Every solved board frees a guess for the rest.

  4. 4 Land all eight within thirteen guesses

Miss one board and the whole day is marked incomplete, no matter how many of the other seven you found.

Resets

Midnight in your local timezone

Count your remaining guesses against your unsolved boards after every turn. Once those two numbers are equal you have no room left to gather information, so everything after that point has to be an actual attempt.

Octordle, answered

Quick answers to the questions we get every day.

What time does the new Octordle come out?

Octordle resets at midnight in your local timezone, wherever you are. All eight answers below come from the same daily seed, so a matching date means matching boards.

Is Octordle harder than Wordle?

Yes, by a wide margin. You're solving 8 words at once with only 13 shared guesses instead of Wordle's 6 guesses for 1 word, so there's very little room to waste a guess on a wrong idea.

Can I play past Octordle puzzles?

Octordle doesn't offer an official archive. Our past answers table below carries all eight words for each day we have covered.

Is Octordle harder than Quordle?

Meaningfully, yes, and not just because there are twice as many words. Quordle gives nine guesses for four boards, a ratio of 2.25 per word. Octordle gives thirteen for eight, a ratio of 1.6. You get less room per board, so the opening coverage guesses matter far more.

What's a good Octordle opening?

Pick 4 to 5 starting words that together cover as many common, unique letters as possible, like CRANE, SLOTH, DUMPY, and BLING. See our strategy tips above.

Where do I play Octordle?

Octordle is published by Britannica Games at britannicagames.com/octordle. It's not affiliated with the New York Times or Wordle, though it shares the same green, yellow, and gray color feedback.
