Phrazle strategy that actually helps
Proven habits from top solvers, useful today and every day.
Phrazle phrases are mostly well-known idioms, proverbs, and common expressions. If your letters spell out something familiar, you're on the right track.
The board shows exactly how many words there are and how long each one is. Use that shape to narrow down possible phrases before you start guessing letters.
Short words like THE, OF, IN, AND, and A show up constantly. A 3-letter word slot is often THE.
Green means right letter, right word, right spot. Yellow means right word, wrong spot. Purple means the letter belongs somewhere in the phrase, just in a different word.
Phrazle resets twice daily, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Stuck on one? Come back later for the other.
Every puzzle belongs to a category like food, sports, or general knowledge. Once you spot it in the feedback, aim your guesses at phrases from that domain.
How Phrazle's tile colors work
Phrazle uses three feedback colors instead of Wordle's two, because a guess has to account for word boundaries as well as letters:
Right letter, right word, right position. Keep it exactly where it is.
Right letter and right word, but the wrong position within that word.
The letter is in the phrase, just in a different word than the one you guessed.
How to play Phrazle

Phrazle is Wordle for phrases. Instead of one five-letter word you are guessing a whole expression, and the tiles tell you not just whether a letter is right but whether it is in the right word of the phrase.
- 1 Read the phrase shape first
The board shows how many words the phrase has and how long each one is before you guess anything.
- 2 Guess a phrase with the same shape
Your guess has to match the word lengths on the board, so your opening guess is as much about fitting the pattern as being right.
- 3 Read the four colors
Green is the right letter in the right spot. Yellow is the right letter in the wrong spot within that same word. Purple means the letter belongs to the phrase but sits in a different word. Gray means it is not in the phrase at all.
- 4 Land it in six guesses
Two fresh phrases are published every day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Purple is the color that makes Phrazle its own game. It tells you a letter is in the phrase but you have put it in the wrong word, which is information Wordle can never give you, and it is usually the fastest route to the answer.

What time does the new Phrazle come out?
Phrazle refreshes twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, resetting at midnight in your local timezone. The morning and afternoon puzzles reset on their own clocks, so both halves of this page can update at different times.
Is Phrazle the same as Wordle?
Not quite. Phrazle is made by Solitaired, not the New York Times, and instead of a single 5-letter word you're guessing a full idiom or expression across multiple words, with green, yellow, and purple feedback instead of Wordle's green, yellow, and gray.
Can I play past Phrazle puzzles?
Phrazle doesn't offer an official archive. Our past answers table below covers recent morning and afternoon phrases if you want to check one.
Do spaces and punctuation count as letters?
No. The board shows word breaks and any apostrophes or hyphens up front, and you never have to guess them. That is genuinely useful information: knowing the phrase splits as 2-3-4 letters narrows the field of common expressions far more than a single letter would.
What's a good way to start a Phrazle guess?
Open with a guess that tests common short filler words in the shortest slots, then use the word-length pattern to guess which longer words are plausible. See our strategy tips above.
