It handles the tricky part properly: a yellow letter is one that belongs in the word but not in that slot, and a grey letter you have already seen in green stays in play.

What is Wordle?

Wordle is a simple online word game that challenges players to find a five-letter word in six guesses, with a new puzzle published every day. As internet fads go, this one turned out to be universal, educational, and free. It's ad-free too.

The game was created by British software engineer Josh Wardle, who wanted a fun, simple game for him and his partner to play. After he shared it on their family WhatsApp group, the fan base grew fast. Thanks to Reddit and Twitter communities sharing their daily scores, the player count jumped from 90 people on November 1 to over 300,000 by the start of 2022.

How to play Wordle

  1. Start with any five-letter word. Enter it and look at the results.
  2. Interpret the colors. Green means the letter and position are correct, yellow means the letter is correct but misplaced, and gray means the letter isn't in the word at all.
  3. Use the feedback. Keep guessing five-letter words and let the colors guide you. You get six guesses to lock in the answer.
  4. Win or learn. Guess correctly and you're done for the day. Miss all six, and the answer reveals itself.
